So the lab where I work was founded by a couple called Eleanor and Guy Dodson. Eleanor still works with us and everyone I know really looks up to her. Aside from the outstanding science she’s done investigating protein structures, that’s used by thousands of scientists around the world, she’s also an absolutely wonderful person. She’s built a fantastic community in my lab, with people forming lifelong friendships, several marriages and a great support system in place. She also has a wicked sense of humor and is a fab baker! It’s this sort of attitude that I aspire to if I ever get to run my own research group.
I recently read a book about how smallpox was eradicated, and was inspired by the scientists who weren’t just good at science, but also understood the real-life difficulties of eradicating a disease such as logistics and politics that also played a part. Having a greater understanding of all the issues in and around your field is really important.
