That’s a great question! Robots are really useful for running high throughput assays on lots of samples and are used for standard things such as blood tests in the NHS, or drug discovery for pharmaceutical companies. However there will always be a need for scientists to do more complex procedures by hand or to apply their brain to results when working! As in all industries, robots can help us work more efficiently but will rarely replace humans, especially in any job where you need to think about what is happening.
Catherine, most of the Chemical plant already online in the world are very lightly manned. Most of the operation are done through automatic processed controlled in the several control rooms.
Not sure if adding robots would benefit anyhow, and at the moment I am not aware of any large scale application of robots in manning oil and gas/petrochemical plant.
