I’m not a nutritionist, but I guess you would want a good supply of energy, both slow release carbohydrates and immediate sugars, a little long-lasting energy from fats, some protein to build new chemicals within your body and some vitamins to help you stay functioning well!

So maybe: toast (carb) with some butter (fat) and an egg (protein) plus some orange juice (sugar and vitamins)

I personally can never be bothered cooking in the morning so I’m more likely to go with cereal (carbs and sugar), milk (fat and protein) and fruit (sugar and vitamins). Because I am vegetarian and do quite a lot of weightlifting and climbing, I myself tend to always need more protein, so I choose protein-rich cereal and sometimes also have some protein yoghurt in my breakfast.

Overall I think you can make any food you like work as long as you remember to balance out all the different nutrients!

Cereal is the easiest thing for me, usually I mix two types like flakes and museli, then pile it with some fruit. Yoghurt or milk on top. It seems to be the right mix of stuff to get my brain going in the morning.

I’m not a nutritionist but I agree with Heather’s advice. You need a bit of everything but the key is to listen to your body. Cereal and toast don’t work for me and I’ll get super hungry mid-morning so I have a big bowl of oat milk porridge with some fruit, honey and spices. I’ve generally found this keeps me going until around 11am if I eat it at 730am. A lot of people I know have eggs in the morning because they find the protein keeps them fuller for longer but I recognise not everyone likes eggs or has the time to cook in the morning!

I am a big fan of porridge and oat bran mixed together and cooked in coconut milk, topped with chopped nuts and fruit (grapes and/or berries) 🙂 Oat bran is really high in fibre so I like to use 50:50 oat bran and porridge, rather than porridge on its own. (Oat bran on its own would be even better health-wise but I am not mad about the texture which is why I mix it with porridge.) I usually mix in egg whites as well. I basically mix the egg whites into the dry oat bran/porridge and then add the coconut milk in aliquots with mixing. Then I heat it in the microwave for 30 second bursts for a total of 2.5 mins (mixing well with a fork between each heating to make sure you don’t get any lumps of egg white!!) And add coconut milk as seen fit (so it’s not dry.)
You can’t taste the egg white at all, but it adds about 20g of protein (2 eggs) to your morning meal and barely any calories. It also fills me up really well. I generally will make it the night before, top with some chopped grapes and cashew nuts/pecan nuts and leave in the fridge overnight.
Over lockdown I haven’t been bothered with putting a huge effort into my breakfast so I’ve been eating protein weetabix topped with a handful of granola and then the usual chopped berries and nuts if I feel like it 😀 Hope this helps! I also am not a nutritionist, this is just a breakfast I enjoy and keeps me full until my next meal!
