I originally was going to apply to Forensic Science at university, and it is still something which fascinates me. I took a few modules in it when I was at university and it was great!
Forensic science is the application of science to criminal and civil law to help aid criminal investigations. It uses techniques you may have seen in crime shows such as fingerprinting or testing samples for DNA – to identify a suspect.
This is all examination of physical evidence to try and prove a crime has been committed and used in a court of law to convict someone of a crime.
If you interested in trying to solve puzzles and using evidence to solve these puzzles then this is a career to consider, but is not the only job like this. Research jobs such as trying to discover new synthesis routes, new catalysts to lower reaction temperatures and discovering new medicines (plus much more) all use these skills. I’d recommend thinking about doing a broader degree such as chemistry as you will still be able to get jobs in forensics if you desire, but you still keep options open.
Forensic science is the art of solving problems using, in my case, chemistry. In my job I use a whole range of scientific equipment to analysis oil based problems we are given. We try to work out fact from fiction and report back what we see to our customers.
It is good fun as you never know what you will find out and no two jobs are ever the same
Forensic science is not just about Chemistry but also looks at Biological aspects of crime scenes and in particular where a body is in a state of decay and not only are you looking at timescale of event but the state of body when its found as causes of death could be marred by decomposition!
