it’s a bit out of area, but it seems to be when an excess of lactic acid is produced when exercising.
lactic acid is produced in muscles when in anaerobic exercise, i.e. when the body is short of oxygen, one of the sugars in the body that is consumed in giving us energy (glucose) turns first to a chemical called pyruvate, that when there not enough oxygen around decomposes into lactate (lactic acid). this makes our muscles hurt, so is a defence mechanism to prevent us overworking our muscles without enough oxygen that might cause lasting damage..
