My CV
-
Education:
after my secondary school, at 18, i studied 2 years in the netherlands, one year in the UK, in Norwich. Then 6 months in the USA and the rest 3.5 years in the netherlands to become Dr Maurits :-). I always wanted to enter the sciences, and i feel i made the right decision. What i would particularly recommend is to study languages on the side, as many as you can. They allow you to travel the world, work in many countries (“the world is your playing field”) and to interact with many different cultures. Just a few sentences in another language go such a long way in establishing a friendly conversation, you learn so much, you earn so much credits.
-
Qualifications:
see above, first chemistry, then a PhD in chemistry. Also a lot of management trainings at business schools around the world. However, I learnt most of my skills “on the job”, by taking on new challenges and by observing people that are good at skills that i wanted to develop. It is like in sports: try to improve yourself a little bit every day!
-
Work History:
I worked recently in a business that was fighting plastics pollution, turning used plastics into something useful. That was in my former company.
-
Employer:
see earlier: Johnson Matthey develops technology that enables our customers to produce cleaner chemicals, sustainable fuels for aircraft, fuel cells to replace diesel engines, etc. We have been around for 206 years, but we are re-inventing ourselves regularly.
-
About Me:
I am a scientist-turned business man-turned Chief Innovation Officer and member of the management team of Johnson Matthey, a FTSE-100 listed company with a 200-year history in science and business.

I was born in The Netherlands, studied there, in the UK and US. Worked for global companies. Moved from Austria to the UK in 2019.
Diversity is important to me, and the promotion of women in technology and business. Technology will deliver the solutions for the problems society is facing, we need all “young hands on deck”, so: study chemistry or another science!

My Work:
In my job I work with 1500 colleagues in technology development, technologies that address climate change, what to do with all our waste, and how to keep the air clean. The bigger issues we address are for example how to ensure a good life for 7-8 billion people on this planet whilst preserving resources. Moves away from fossil feedstock and mineral and water intensive processes and products are part of our innovation efforts.

I have a PhD in Catalysis, I actually worked on the development of car emission reduction catalysts 30 years ago, which is an area still very important to Johnson Matthey. I also ran and reorganized businesses, I like to bring technology and commerce together.
I enjoy working for a company that is focusing on solving, with our customers, the problems society is facing: climate change, waste, inner city air quality, etc. Sustainability is important, I also want to leave the planet in a state that also future generations can enjoy.
-
My Typical Day:
I am an early riser, start my office day at 7:30 am, so i have some time late in the day to go for a run. Running is important to me, it is relaxing after a day in the office. I have a lot of meetings in which we discuss what the technologies are that we have to develop, which solutions we need to develop for our planet, our people, with our customers. And I help JM to make some money that we can then for example use to develop even better solutions: 5% of the revenues of what we sell are being ploughed back into research, development, engineering and scale-up.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would make a short youtube video with colleagues at Johnson Matthey that promotes, in a funny way, studying STEM, but addressing serious topics like waste, plastics, bio-based materials, climate change, etc. We need scientists to help solve the problems humanity is facing.
